A lot of people would like to start a blog of their own but they don’t feel that they have the ability or just plain don’t know how or where to start. In this series we’ll give you some pointers and get you on your way. Even if you already have a blog you might even learn a trick or two - and of course, as always, you can comment and let us know what your tips and tricks are.

First off, the biggest question that I get asked by a lot of beginners is, what, exactly, is a blog? The answer is not as cut and dried, but the best way I can sum it up is as follows:

A blog is an online journal. This online journal can be about a specific topic or can range up to just about anything. You can post personal comments or rants, link to articles you come across (not to mention other blog posts) and even post your own full length articles if you so desire. A lot of people want to classify a blog into a traditional medium but honestly you should allow your idea of a blog to be more free flowing. Don’t restrict your idea of what a blog is or you may find that you restrict yourself as a blogger. In other words, don’t hold back!

The above is, of course, my own definition of a blog. Others may have their own definition but hopefully you get the basic idea. If you still have concerns and need a more thorough understanding of what a blog is then I highly recommend that you read the page on Wordpress.org about blogging at this link. That link is very good at describing what a blog is all about. It also, however, delves deeper into some things like trackbacks and pingbacks, etc that you may not want to get into just yet if you are a beginner. I don’t want anyone to get information overload and have that discourage them from this unique opportunity that is open to all of us - even if you feel that you lack the technical skills.

So now that you have some understanding of what a blog really is, what do you do to get started on your own?
